November 19, 2014 Campus Fashion, Student Styles, Style How to: Get the most out of your closet Lets face it, when it comes to a night downtown, a special event or just relaxing with friends, we all want to look as good as possible. Who doesn’t want Carrie Bradshaw’s closet, with choices upon choices of fabulous outfits? Unfortunately, most of us don’t have our favorite “Sex and the City” star’s money, let alone her extensive closet, so we have to work with what we have – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Next time you’re looking in your closet thinking, “I have nothing to wear,” consider using one of these tactics to spice up your outfit. Layering Layering is more than just a way to dress for the weather as Michiganders – it has style appeal, too. You can create a completely different outfit if you add layers for the fall and dwindle them down on warmer days. Layers, which allow for countless combinations of your favorite pieces, can trick people into thinking you have more clothes than you really do. Jewelry When adding to your look, it’s important to remember balance. A chunky necklace and a few bangle bracelets will accent a simple look. If your outfit is already bold without jewelry, consider adding simple chandelier-style earrings or a modest, layered necklace. When it comes to fashion, the right jewelry can make or break an outfit. (Photo | Claire Abendroth) Scarves Large body scarves can be very useful if you’re able to think of unique ways to use them. Scarves have always been a fan-favorite when adding a little bit of fun to an outfit, and when it comes to style during the winter months, there’s one rule to live by: The bigger the scarf, the better. Large body scarves and sarees are great because of the many different ways you can use them. Sarees and over-sized scarves can be knotted and or folded and worn as cute ponchos, coveralls and more. Shoes You’ll never hear a girl utter the phrase, “I think I have too many shoes,” and for good reason. Shoes may not make the woman, but they definitely have the potential to make or break an outfit. Even a casual ensemble, like a tank top and jeans, can become a stylish outfit with a little assistance. Mary Jane’s are a cute way to turn a casual look into a more polished and classic one, not to mention they pair amazingly well with blazers and sweater jackets. Boots can be your fashion saviors, as they turn just about any look into casual chic or upscale sleek. If you’re looking to add a little sass to your outfit starting from the bottom, knee-high flat boots are a perfect way to turn up your glam dial.
