A Night in the Spotlight: Threads Best Looks

In collaboration with VERGE: Story written by Sophie Chambers

On Saturday, April 12, students, faculty, and family gathered in the Plachta auditorium, where Threads hosted “A Night in the Spotlight,” their yearly Fashion Show. This showcased the work of 24 different student designers, and the clothing displayed this year demonstrated absolute opulence. Members from Verge magazine attended the show and decided to shed light on some of our favorite outfits!

Sofia Serratos (left) and Valentina Franco (right) stepped out in mesmerizing red and white garments, which were the epitome of elegance. Serratos wore a white cage skirt adorned with crimson roses atop a boned white body suit with gold brush strokes, completed with a single rose tucked behind her ear. While Valentina sported a tulle-feathered red gown, which gave the illusion of flames reaching to the floor. Paired with a set of stark white wings that popped against the flowing garment. The collection was awarded the Judges Choice Award.

This next look is from a collection titled “Moments In Love” by AJ Malonson. It showcased a darker color palette, embellished with glittering metallic tassels that stood out from across the auditorium. The outfit was topped off with intricate jewels arranged on the face and a string of black butterflies crawling up the leg that took it to the next level. This collection won the Avant Garde Award.

These looks, designed by Charlize Wright in a collection titled “Gilded Illusions,” were a definite fan favorite. Cayla Cataline (pictured left) wore a corset of sparkling black rhinestones. Her outfit also exhibited a black feathered headpiece and fans that created the illusion of a skirt flaring behind her as she flowed across the stage. Cataline shared the stage with Amanda Whitaker, who came out in a table-shaped white gown which had a futuristic sort of feel. It was paired with a giant pearl-encrusted hat that lit up when the lights were cut. The collection received the Best Overall Collection award as well as the Audience Choice Award.

Having a pop of red seemed to be consistent throughout the show. Alyssa Ballard strutted the runway in a gorgeous white corset, completed with a patch of red beads. What makes this look so enthralling is the illusion that these beads give. From afar, the beads look like blood dripping from just below her chest. According to this look’s creator, Jubilee Lacy, this rather dark concept was inspired by Lady Gaga’s clothing and performance at the 2009 VMAs.

These next looks are from a collection simply titled “Rot” designed by Lauren Fulk. Morgan Hughley walked the stage in an earthy-toned off-the-shoulder dress, which contrasted greatly from the previous looks. What made this look stand out was the detailing of rot of all natural colors and sizes, which grew from her left shoulder, and spread across the top front of the dress.

Marina Froehlich looked fierce on the runway as she posed in a short pleated skirt and a beaded and ripped baby tee, which was elevated by crocheted-balaclava with lady bugs and a beaded lady bug purse. But what makes this outfit so eye-catching is the detailing along the edge of each article of clothing. Each utilizes multiple embellishment techniques and attention to detail. Lauren received the Carhartt Best Overall Execution Award which honors the collection most consistent across materials like mood boards, sketches and final product.

This look worn by Shaniya Coffee, in another AJ Malonson collection titled “Celadon,” was definitely giving spring vibes. Coffee looked like a fairy as she floated across the stage in a green halter dress, with pink and red flowers trailing upward. She even wore flowers scattered throughout her gorgeous hair to compete the look.

This last look, from the collection titled “Mystic Elegance” by Madylen Vanhuizen, was an enchanting long-sleeved dress in white lace that cascaded to the ground. The special part of this garment was the sparkling embellishments that perfectly caught the stage lights and glimmered at every angle. The dress also featured a hooded cape in the same the same material, which tied the outfit together, creating a very cohesive, refined appearance. Madylen received the Best FMD 447 Collection Award, which honors a designer from the collection development class
