Alternative Breaks Program Offers Students Hands-On Service Opportunities

Central Michigan University’s nationally ranked Alternative Breaks program is celebrating its 31st year, continuing its mission of sending students across the country and internationally to serve communities and support nonprofit organizations. 

Trips take place during winter, spring, and summer breaks, each consisting of ten students, including two trained site leaders. 

Brooke Gordon, a student coordinator for the past two years, has participated in four trips and led 50 students. She said the experience has been rewarding, as she has watched her peers grow while taking on new challenges. 

“It’s a great way to not only get involved on campus but also build connections nationwide, which can help students network and potentially land internships or jobs,” Gordon said. 

One upcoming trip, Disability in Higher Education, will take place this summer at the Grand Canyon. Spots are still available, and students can sign up or find more information on Engage Central. 

Alternative Breaks is part of the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center, located in the Bovee University Center, Room 106. More details about the program and sign-up links can be found here.
