March 20, 2011 Spotlight THREADS Designer Spotlight: Shannon Hubbard Read about how your favorite THREADS designers find their inspirations and get the sneak peak on what to expect at this year's Threads fashion show, April 16, 2011. Shannon Hubbard will be displaying her collection at the Threads fashion show on April 16. (Justine Young | Grand Central Magazine) Shannon Hubbard describes her line as “fashion” and eccentric. Hubbard, an apparel merchandising and design senior, is passionate about sustainability. All of her garments are constructed out of recycled fabrics. The fabrics are usually an old outfit or fabric given to the Dream Key Design Academy where she is a sewing instructor. “I don’t do ready wear,” Hubbard said. “I have a lot of diversity in my fabrics I am using.” This is Hubbards second year designing for the show and she has higher personal expectations for her line. “I am hoping for it to be more professional,” Hubbard said. Working as an instructor has bettered her technical sewing skills and time management because she is able to work in the studio. Her line is composed of five looks which she described as dressy casual. “I am definitely trying to spend a lot of time on accessories this year,” Hubbard said. The accessories she will be making include hats, hoodies, jewelry and booties. “I like to pull unique things,” Hubbard said. Fabrics such as leather, fur and beading are some of the unique materials that she will incorporate into designing her line. Hubbard’s family will be modeling for her, each outfit matching their own unique personalities. “I get a lot of my inspiration from people in my life,” Hubbard said. In comparison to last years line where Hubbard used bright neon recycled fabric, this year it is going to be earth tone greens, purples, blues and browns. Hubbard’s line will highlight how recycling can be fashionable, educating consumers and others on sustainability is a long term goal for her.
