October 31, 2025 Campus Life, People, People of Central, Students, Uncategorized Halloween at CMU: see what students are up to, Story and photos by: Beth Nocerini Haley Sherman is a freshman at CMU and has loved Halloween ever since she was a kid. “My dad and I used to always go out trick or treating, and he gets really into it,” she said. Sherman recalled the many years when her dad would go all out for the holiday. “Our house was always crazy decorated to the point where I would be scared of my own house,” said Sherman while laughing. Sherman and her Dad on a Past Halloween “It just brings back good memories, and I really like fall,” said Sherman about her feelings surrounding the holiday, “It’s fun to dress up and eat a crap ton of candy.” “You are never too old for free candy,” she said as she told the story of a woman who refused to give her candy last year while trick or treating because Sherman looked too old. With Halloween falling on a Friday, many CMU students have multiple costumes lined up for both Friday and Saturday nights. Shermans plans on dressing up one night as Alphaba from Wicked and Woodstock from Peanuts for another. “I’m excited to just hang out with some friends and celebrate Halloween,” said Sherman. Alyssa Ballard is another CMU student who has multiple costumes for the weekend, “I will be Raven from Teen Titans on Saturday and then I am going to be one of the Dumitrescu sisters on Friday,” Ballard said. “Everyone gets so excited” said Ballard when asked why she loves Halloween on campus, “It’s like a community.” “This is my favorite holiday, so I am really excited. It’s like my favorite time,” said Ballard. Some of Ballard’s recommendations to other CMU students during Halloween are to drink a lot of water and to have a safe ride home if you plan on going out. In a survey reaching over 100 CMU students, we asked what their plans are alng with what they are dressing up as. Over half of the participants are planning on going out with 56%, 15.5% said they are staying in and/or watching movies, 10% are leaving campus to either go home or see friends, 8.2% are trick or treating or handing out candy, and 7.3% are working. When asked if they were dressing up throughout the weekend, 78.2% said yes and 21.8% said no. Out of the students who are dressing up, 19.2% have more than one costume with some students having three to four ready to go. Some of the popular responses for what students are dressing up as were, fairies from Tinkerbell, Mator from Cars, pirates and different cartoon princesses. More uncommon responses were, KISS, Santa, the Treblemakers from Pitch Perfect, Twister the game, a broken porcelain doll and a banana. “It’s a time for people to pretend to be something else and have fun,” was one of the responses to feelings surrounding Halloween. “I think it’s fun, but it can also be dangerous,” was another.
