December 5, 2010 Campus, College Life Relay for Life of CMU looks forward to April Walk For Cancer, sets goal at $60,000 Relay for Life of CMU event chair, Meagan Kravat and vice chair, Alli Balow pose with the Central Michigan football team last spring during a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. (Photo courtesy of Relay for life of CMU) With thousands of students roaming Central Michigan Univeristy’s (CMU) campus every day, it’s seemingly easy to find a Registered Student Organization (RSO) that fits each one perfectly. Whether being a part of Greek Life or Pipe Smokers Club, there is a spot for every student. For many, including Meagan Kravat, a neuroscience senior, being a part of Relay For Life of CMU hits home. “I started participating in Relay For Life when in high school and I didn’t know anyone who had been effected by cancer,” Kravat said, who is the Event Chairperson for the RSO. “But when I got to college, my grandfather died from a brain tumor and it certainly hit home.” While many RSOs on campus are merely to meet other students with common interests, some, including Relay For Life of CMU, hold an annual event for the greater good. Relay for Life of CMU hosts an annual fundraiser “Walk For Cancer” every April, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The 24-hour walking relay averages nearly 75 teams, with 10 or more members in each team. During the 24-hour period, at least one member of each team has to be on the track at all times. Last year’s event had nearly 80 teams participate, helping earn roughly $56,000 on the year. “Last year we fell a little short of our $64,000 goal,” Kravat said. “But we are still happy with the results.” Kravat stated that this year’s goal of $60,000 should be met with the help of increased support and participation in the April walk. While the April walk is their biggest fundraiser, the Relay For Life of CMU hosts other numerous events. One of which is the Colleges Against Cancer Night At The Joe. Relay For Life of CMU and the Detroit Red Wings have teamed up to offer CMU students and faculty the opportunity to watch the Red Wings play host to the St. Louis Blues at 7:30 PM at a discounted ticket price of $23. Of the $23 ticket price, $5 from each ticket will be donated to Relay For Life of CMU. The upper bowl seats are originally priced at $41, giving students an $18 discount. The tentative due date for ticket applications is December 3. To download the application click here. Relay For Life of CMU meets every other Monday at 7:00 PM in Bovee University Center.
