Wine Wednesday: Pairing wine with pizza

Wine combined with pizza is like having a tall beer with a juicy burger – it’s the perfect match. Whether you’re catching a late-night delivery or eating out at an Italian pizzeria, there are a variety of wines that can match your favorite dish.

Cheese pizza

Wine: GSM or Montepulciano

A classic slice of cheese pizza with red sauce is the perfect partner to a fine, red wine. With this pair, the strong flavors in both are made evident – deliciously evident.

Pepperoni pizza

Wine: Sangiovese or Cabernet Franc

Pepperoni has an intense flavor with a variety of spices, including cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika and sugar. Because of the fat content in pepperoni, the flavor spreads throughout the cheese on each slice. You’ll need a strong red wine, such as a Sangiovese to balance the pepperoni flavor.

Margherita pizza

Wine: Garnacha or Dry Rosé

With the light flavor and aroma of fresh basil, tomatoes and mozzarella, a rosé is the perfect Margherita pizza wine pairing. A light red wine will always fit perfect with this light combination of flavors.

Hawaiian pizza

Wine: Riesling or Zinfandel

A slightly sweet Riesling will actually pair well with a fine piece of Canadian bacon. The acidity in the Riesling acts as a palate cleanser and the sweetness will heighten the flavor of the pineapple. If you can’t find a sufficient Riesling, pick a sweeter red, such as a Zinfandel.

White pizza

Wine: Pinot Noir or Chardonnay

White pizza breaks away from the traditional red-sauce favorite. Cream-based dishes elevate the natural “creamy” notes to both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
