September 19, 2010 Food, Recipes Meals in advance, good or bad? Recently I found a website which claimed I could make 30 days’ worth of meals in one day. What? I can cook for one day and not have to prepare anything for a month! In theory this is great. But, upon further research of this site, I found this costs money and space. Like most college students, I’m busy. I have a full class load, I work and I’m always open to things that may make my life easier. Recently I found a website which claimed I could make 30 days’ worth of meals in one day. What? I can cook for one day and not have to prepare anything for a month! In theory this is great. But, upon further research of this site, I found this costs money and space. Which, being a college student, I don’t have much of either. The costs are food for 30 days’ worth of meals, disposable foil pans and large freezer bags. For the food part, bulk is cheaper, but still expensive when you’re shopping once a month on a student budget. As far as space, a deep freezer is required to accommodate that much food. As for me, I don’t have any more room than my refrigerator freezer so this plan is not an option for me. Maybe I could downsize this program? When I shop, I plan and buy for the week, so why couldn’t I cook for the week? If I spent a Saturday afternoon prepping and preparing for the week I would have so much more free time. It would take minutes to make great homemade dinners every night. Just take it out of the freezer, thaw and reheat. Easy! My shopping for the week turned into prepping for the week. Not bad. Like I said, I’m all about making life easier. One day of chaos gives me a weeks’ of worth of meals ready to be thawed, reheated and enjoyed. I whipped up recipes including Cream Cheese Chicken, which I later served over egg noodles, Salsa Verde Enchiladas and lasagna. I managed to work out the freezer space issue. I had meals that were easy to reheat, delicious and nutritious. I definitely see myself doing this again. But, the other night I wasn’t in the mood for the Sicilian Casserole that was on schedule. It was ready to reheat, but I just wasn’t in the mood for it. Now what? I did what anyone who is too busy to cook would do. I ordered pizza. That was easy!
