January 15, 2013 Campus Fashion, Student Styles, Style, Trend and Beauty HOW TO: Successfully do a sock bun One of the latest hair trends doesn’t have to do with dying your hair or buzzing half of your head. Rather, it has to do with how you style your hair. One new style trend, recently being sported around college campuses and Pinterest alike, is known as the sock bun. A sock bun gives a clean and sophisticated feel to any look. Polished and refined, the sock bun is a simple style to recreate that appears as though it took effort. Saginaw freshman Kimberly Johnson says she enjoys this hairstyle because “it’s very simple and easy to do.” All you will need is a sock, preferably one close to the color of your hair, a hair tie to pull hair back, and bobby pins. The first step to doing a sock bun is to cut the toe of the sock off and roll the fabric down into the shape of a doughnut. Then, pull hair back into a high ponytail and secure with a hair tie. Next, place the sock doughnut at the very end of your ponytail and begin to pull the ends of your hair around the sock, rolling the sock up the length of the ponytail and tucking hair under as you go. Finally, clean up loose ends by using bobby pins to secure hair around the bun. This hairstyle is doable for a variety of styles because of its simplicity and elegance. Johnson makes the sock bun work for her ever-changing style. “I have a variety of different styles, it just depends how I’m feeling that day or week.” This type of style is also not limited to those of us with long hair. Johnson, in fact, claimed she was amazed she could do a sock bun; because she originally thought her hair was too short. Sock buns are perfect for a day rushing to and from classes, lunch with friends, or a night on the town. Versatile enough to be dressed up or down, and requiring minimal effort to do, the sock bun is a perfect addition to every girl’s wardrobe.
