February 1, 2016 Students Leadership Institute Hosts Spark Leadership Series Central Michigan’s Spark Leadership Series, formerly known as Alpha Leadership Experience, is back for the 2016 spring semester. The four week series began Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. in Towers residence hall, Kulhavi classrooms 141 and 142 at 6 p.m and ends Thursday, Feb. 18. The four week Alpha Leadership experience was created to give opportunity to CMU students and to help them develop their own leadership style and skill. With the help of coordinator Vince Thurman and co-coordinators Natalie Woods and David Thurman the event has been upgraded due to its success. Thus giving the event a new name – Spark. Central Michigan’s leadership students Natalie Woods, Vince Thurman and Amanda Yats are three of the facilitators of the Spark Leadership series on Thursday, Jan. 28 in Powers Hall on the campus of Central Michigan University. Sessions begin with students receiving a Spark Leadership manual. Located on the manual is one of six words the facilitators have brainstormed to describe leadership. This semesters words are involvement, diversity, challenge, progress, intentional and understanding. Each group of students has two designated leaders that lead them through a series of interactive activities where students are forced to talk and share experiences with others that they more than likely have never met before. Spark series facilitator Abbie Robinson listens as her group suggests words to compose a definition for leadership. Senior Emily Brown loved her first experience at the Spark event on Thursday, Jan. 28. Just like many other students, she had no idea what to expect. Brown said: Personally, I wouldn’t call myself as a natural born leader, and this isn’t something I would normally sign up for since it’s a bit out of my comfort zone, but it definitely pushes you to grow and better yourself, which is something every student can benefit from. Wednesday sessions are held in the Towers Kulhavi classrooms 141 and 142 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m and Thursday sessions are held in Powers Hall Room 136 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visit OrgSync if you would like to register for this campus event.
