Earth Day Celebration on Campus

Campus clean up, sustainability educational opportunities, and other events took place earlier this month throughout campus in honor of April 22nd being Earth Day.

To start off the month Central Sustainability hosted a community clean-up event and competition among participating registered student organizations. The Sierra Club won and 164 pounds of trash was cleaned up among all competitors.

Sofia Sanchez, the current excursion chair for the Sierra Club said the club participated in this event last year together as a club as well. Sanchez also participated in one of the sustainability walks with one of her environmental classes.

“My favorite part of the walk was learning that CMU sends food waste from the dining hall to a compost company, and the compost is then used on the marching band field,” Sanchez said.

Other events that took place during this month were a climate solution summit, a peace flag-raising ceremony, a workshop, and Britt Wray, a keynote speaker talking about coping with climate change.

On Monday CMU’s Student Government Association posted on its Instagram featuring members of the sustainability committee sharing tips on how to be more sustainable. The tips included what can be recycled and using reusable items like water bottles and bags instead of using single-use plastic.

Kathryn House, the committee chair at the end of the video said, “We should be caring about these issues every day, not just on Earth Day.”

Earth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and appreciating the Earth’s natural resources and ecosystems. Earth Day encourages everyone to take action to address environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction. It gives us an opportunity to participate in activities like tree planting, clean-up campaigns, environmental education, and advocacy for sustainable practices.

Don’t forget to take care of our planet.
