Every Guy Should Own: A high fashion moment

Carrie Bradshaw once said, “Every fall, we leave the foolish choices of our past behind and look forward to the future … this is known as Fashion Week.”  The major spring collections are showing around the world in fashion week this month. These shows are among the most anticipated events of the year in fashion, deciding what we will be wearing in the seasons to come — and also what we will not.

Many of the looks coming down the runway seem sleek and unattainable, but in reality most are accessible to those of us who aren’t frequenting high dollar boutiques and department stores. We may not have the budget to purchase designer items, but with a little creativity, most looks on the runway can be replicated. Men’s high fashion is easy to imitate — allowing us to look just as good as the models on the runway, but for a fraction of the price.

With that in mind, here are a few ways to bring your outfit from commercially conventional to high fashion chic:

  1. Try buttoning your shirt all the way up — you see this look coming down the runway a lot. Most guys only button all the way up when they wear ties, but the trend is becoming more popular in everyday fashion. You can achieve this look with any well-made shirt you already own; just pair it with a nice sweater and some dark wash jeans and you have a great outfit.
  2. Don’t be afraid of a few oversized items. Many designers show oversized looks, and when they are done right they are not only chic but comfortable. An oversized sweater is a great for fall and can be easily dressed up or down while keeping you comfortable and confident.
  3. Try a pair of high-water pants — they are showing up in a lot of the major men’s fashion shows. High-waters are an easy way to give a basic outfit some complexity while hinting at a high fashion look. They are an easy fix for any outfit; you can pair them with almost any shirt or shoe and look fashionable.
  4. Go to a thrift store to look for some interesting pieces that will keep your look fresh without breaking the bank. Fashion runs in cycles, so thrift stores often carry pieces that are actually quite fashionable and cheap!
  5. Layered looks are always great for fall. Layering is a great way to stay warm in the chilly fall weather and keep your look interesting. Instead of reaching for a bulky jacket  to go over a T-shirt, try a Henley underneath a sweater with a light jacket to keep yourself warm and looking nice.
  6. Don’t be afraid of patterns. Patterns are being shown in a lot of major collections this season. Many guys are scared of patterns and choose to wear solids because they are safer. Solids are great for building a wardrobe but patterns can do the same thing and show a little personality. Look for patterns that aren’t too complex and pair them with solid items, letting the patterned piece be the center of attention.
  7. Look for a great pair of oxfords or low boots — they seem to be the footwear of choice right now and both are great for fall. The right shoes can transform an outfit, and if you look for a pair in neutral colors they can be paired with almost anything.

High fashion is all about straying from the “normal” items and styling.  If you are attempting a high fashion look, don’t be afraid to go a little out of your comfort zone. Trying an unfamiliar styling technique or choosing an item that feels a little out of place may be just the boost your look needs.
