Free Things To Do on Campus

Story by Katherine Brown

Finding something affordable to do isn’t as hard as it may seem, as there are several free activities available to Central Michigan University students on campus.

Looking for a place to warm up on a cold day? Head to the hot tub or saunas, and cool off after by jumping into the pool located in the Student Activity Center. The SAC offers numerous other activities including Esports, a fitness and weight training center, and two large sports forums that can be used for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. The SAC is open Monday-Friday, from 6 a.m.- 10 p.m., and 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Museum of Cultural and Natural History offers four exhibits which include anthropology, zoology, geology, and history. The museum is open to the public and offers classroom activities and tours. It is located in Row Hall 124 and is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Jay Martin, the director of the museum says, “It is a great resource for students to learn more about the different displays the museum has to offer and to get hands-on experience.”

Behind the scenes group tours of the museum are offered for RSOs, students interested should contact Martin at marti6jc@cmich.edu for more information.

All sports events that are at home are free to students. Currently, men’s and women’s basketball are in season with games typically on the Tuesdays, Wednesdays and the weekends. March 20th is the men’s baseball first home game of the season. More information on sports schedules can be found on CMU’s athletic website.

In the middle of campus, between Dow Science and Brooks Hall, is CMU’s own greenhouse which has plants from different regions and climates, they also have a little fish pond filled with Koi fish. The greenhouse is another great place to warm up on a cold day. It’s open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Program Board is an on-campus organization that puts on fun and educational events, suchas concerts, tournaments, comedians and many more for students throughout the semester. More information can be found on Engage Central.

All students have access to the Corq app, which has upcoming events and its location and time listed. Engage Central is another great resource students have that shows what events are happening on campus.
