March 31, 2016 Opinion An Open Letter: Women Empower Women Dear all women, To be a woman is a beautiful, beautiful thing. And most importantly, it is something to be proud of. I am a woman – I am a 22-year-old woman, a Latina woman, a Catholic woman and I am a woman in the media. I am a woman who in five short weeks will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree and a long list of not just dreams, but set goals, all of which I will accomplish in my future. I am proud of the woman I am. I am proud of all that I have done thus far to get to where I am. I am proud of the mindset I have instilled. I was raised by a strong mother, who raised even stronger daughters. Daughters who are fiercely independent, who hold great integrity, feel unstoppable with all their efforts and hold ambitious personalities. While I know who I am and what I want, it saddens me to know this is not the case for all females. Being a woman means we not only can do just as much and more than men, but we can astonish the world with our efforts. In 1987 the world realized just how astounding women are. Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 naming the month of March as Women’s History Month. Looking back through history, women fought for their rights, women supported and empowered one another. And today, the need is still relevant – women need to empower one another. To be a woman is a beautiful, beautiful thing. And most importantly, it is something to be proud of. Now that March is coming to end, it is paramount women everywhere feel praise and appreciation all year round and not just this single month. So women, I ask you all to love your messy hair, love those dark circles you just can’t seem to get rid of, love your skin, love your smile, love your curves – love your natural self. And far more important than looks, love your intuition, love your wisdom, love your morals – love yourself. Women, accept who you are. And remember it’s OK if you are different. We are all different. I am different, and love meeting people who are different from me. Be confident in your uniqueness and express yourself. Women, value who you are. You have power. The power to change the world and even if you don’t know it yet, you are great and deserving for any and all dreams to come true. Make it happen. You are an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. Feel the empowerment and spread the empowerment. Women, you can and will change the world – you are worthy. To be a woman is a beautiful, beautiful thing. And most importantly, it is something to be proud of. Often, I hear from many females “I’ll just marry rich. I’ll marry a surgeon, lawyer, CEO, etc.” While I, myself have been guilty of joking about this in the past, I now see how serious some females in college are when they say this. So, for those women who truly feel this way, I want to remind you, you can be that surgeon, you can be that lawyer or CEO. You can be rich all on your own. You will be the success you look for. I already can’t wait to see all of you reach that achievement and I look forward to meeting you in the future. Love, Adriana Cotero P.S. To be a woman is a beautiful, beautiful thing. And most importantly, it is something to be proud of.
