February 1, 2018 Drinks, Drinks, Food, Food & Beverage, Food & Wellness, Healthy Living Now Open: Soul Sista’s Restaurant Story by Chanda Crenshaw Mount Pleasant’s first soul food restaurant, Soul Sista’s, opened Monday, Jan. 15th at 1010 West Broadway, and the town just can’t get enough of the home-style cooking. Co-owner Vansessa Spratt came together with her family and decided to create a business that was friendly and personable with the community. Since the age of 15, Pratt has always had a vision of opening up a restaurant, but as we all know, something so grand doesn’t happen overnight. Pratt moved to Mount Pleasant in 2012, when she first began looking for a building for her restaurant. After searching for quite sometime she put her hunt on hold and found a second home at Faith Community Church. Always a spiritual person, she gained guidance and support from the church encouraging her to keep going with her dream. “God has put me in this position to make everything happen. I love cooking, its my passion. Sometimes you just have to be patient and listen to his word, he’ll lead you to the right path,” she said. Keeping her faith many doors began to open for Pratt. She had the opportunity to start selling her infamous peach cobbler at the CMU Food Truck Fridays. Word spread fast around Mount Pleasant on how delicious the pie really was, which led to Cranker’s Restaurant asking Pratt if she would offer her pie’s at their business. Pratt knew then, she was heading in the right direction. Soon after she found the perfect location for her restaurant at 1010 West Broadway and invested into the building. “What helped me decide on this location is the amount of space. It’s perfect for my business and it makes everything feels homie,” she said. Although there is not a set menu in place, you can find all of your southern favorites: macaroni and cheese, ribs, fried chicken, peach cobbler, pork chops and mash potatoes. Inside the restaurant you can view the daily special hand written on a white board . Friday’s special consisted of a pork chop dinner, served with rice & gravy, macaroni and cheese with butter milk biscuits. Soul Sista’s is the perfect place to enjoy a home cooked meal, it is unique in its kind with being the only soul food restaurant in town. There’s is no doubt, that this is the place to eat. “We love what we are doing. My favorite thing is to see customers smiling because of the food that we cook, it brings me joy”
