Confetti Squares: Fun alternative to Rice Krispie Treats

This recipe for Confetti Squares is a fun twist on the old classic Rice Krispy treat. I am a huge huge fan of Rice Krispies because I grew up eating my grandma’s.  When I saw this recipe I thought it would be a fun twist to add to the treat that I already love!

Ingredients:
Makes 9

  • 9 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 12 cups (2 1/2 bags) miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 6 cups Cap’n Crunch cereal
  • 6 cups Froot Loops cereal
  • Vegetable-oil cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Lightly spray a 9-by-9-by-2-inch baking pan with vegetable oil cooking spray; set aside. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add salt and marshmallows; stir with a wooden spoon until melted. Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies, Cap’n Crunch, and Froot Loops, and stir until combined.
  2. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan. To prevent sticking, coat your hands with vegetable spray, and press the mixture evenly into the pan. Let cool about 30 minutes.
  3. Cut into 3-by-3-inch bars. Store in an airtight container for up to three days.

These treats start out like any other Rice Krispie and are just as easy to make. The Cap’n Crunch and Froot Loops make these treats much more colorful. I had no problems making them either.
As I said I grew up eating my grandmas Rice Krispies and she always used a ton of butter and these treats call for nine tablespoons, which I think is a bit much.  However, one thing that I have never seen and my grandma does not do is add salt. I thought it was weird to see this but it’s what the recipe called for.  Don’t do it!  Combined with Cap’n Crunch, a somewhat salty cereal, the treats taste too salty.  Over all these treats were a fun, colorful treat.
I had five people taste the Confetti Squares and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5- 1 being the lowest 5 being the highest- on over all taste, texture, appearance, colorfulness, and willingness to try making the recipe. I also had them make comments on what they would change about the Confetti Square.  They are without a doubt making it into my book and I will make them several more times!

Overall Taste- 4.5
Texture- 5
Appearance- 5
Colorfulness- 5
Willingness to make recipe- 5

Comments- Everyone agreed that they were salty but they loved them!
