October 6, 2016 Archives, Drinks, Food & Beverage, Restaurants New Food on Campus: The Bovee University Center Brings in Burrito Bowl Story by Camille Wachholz Photo by Catherine Pace Most Central Michigan students have noticed a change in the Bovee University Center this year – so long, Quiznos. Hello, Burrito Bowl! What is Burrito Bowl? Burrito Bowl is a chain restaurant that is only available at universities like ours. They are a made-to-order restaurant with burritos (of course), rice bowls, tacos, nachos, quesadillas and salads. Burrito Bowl is not limited to Mexican food – they also have Greek, Korean, Mexican and even Italian flavors across the menu. Burrito Bowl has taken vegan and vegetarian students into consideration, too, and they offer 100% vegan flour tortillas, black and pinto beans, corn tortilla chips, guacamole, various salsas, vegetables like red peppers, onions, lettuce, and cucumbers, and various dressings like the sweet and spicy Korean BBQ sauce or Strawberry vinaigrette. All of these ingredients can be used to create a yummy rice bowl, or a stuffed burrito. For gluten-free students, there are 51 compatible options including vegetables, corn tortilla chips, salads and chicken, steak, or pork. Any other allergies a student may have are most likely able to accommodated for, just ask! Smoothie lovers, have no fear – Freshens is still available with smoothies, salads, and frozen yogurt. There is also an area to buy quick snacks like energy drinks and protein bars. It’s a one-stop (healthy) shop! Sizing Up the Competition For students who are fans of Qdoba, you just hit the jackpot. Burrito Bowl is very similar, but offers more variety. Some of the menu items that differentiates Burrito Bowl from Qdoba are carrots, apples, bacon, red peppers, onions, cucumbers, various cheeses and delicious dressings like Southwest Chipotle and Athenian Greek dressing, among other things. Variety on CMU’s Campus Burrito Bowl is a great addition to campus, and the lack of Quiznos is made up for with a Subway next to the Real Food On Campus dining hall. For fans of spicy foods or students who want to try something new, Burrito Bowl could be a new after-class favorite for everyone.
