November 28, 2010 Style Celebrity Style on a College Student’s Budget Central Michigan University students, Annie Brower and Dana Bradford, incorporate their favorite icons into their everyday wardrobes. Fashion Merchandising and Design students Annie Brower, Middleville freshman, and Dana Bradford, Bay City sophomore, are each inspired by unique fashion celebrities. Annie's quirky-vintage style is influenced by singer Jenny Lewis and actress Zooey Deschanel. Where as Dana's experimental fashion mirrors that of rocker-chic "Gossip Girl" actress Taylor Momsen. (Tanya Moutzalias | Grand Central Magazine) Celebrities are pioneers for showcasing new trends. Celebrity style is constantly featured in magazines, blogs and on television, enabling fashion lovers to keep up with the fast-paced, evolving fashion world. Mount Pleasant has never been known for its fashion, however, two students have still found ways to remain true to their individual style and channel their style icons without hurting their bank accounts. Annie Brower, an apparel design freshman, refers to her style as, “classic with a twist of rockabilly, and I guess somewhat androgynous.” Brower’s style has not always been so easy to pinpoint. Spending most of her life testing different styles lead to eventually discovering her own individual style, as well as celebrities whose style she admires and emulates. “Zooey Deschanel and Jenny Lewis are two of my style icons,” Brower said. Both stars are infamous for their quirky and vintage style. Shopping at vintage, thrift and discount retailers enables Brower to easily incorporate their style into her wardrobe. Dana Bradford, an apparel merchandising sophomore, is a continual experimentalist when it comes to style. Instead of following the trends, Bradford said she continually innovates what’s “in” to work with her style. “I went through a lot of phases; some were a lot more rough than others,” Bradford said. “It’s grown out of going with the trends, to making my own with what works for me.” It’s no surprise that one of Bradford’s style icons is Taylor Momsen, star of the hit TV series, Gossip Girl. Momsen transformed her style from preppy polished school girl, to edgy rocker chic, much in the same way Bradford’s style has evolved. Bradford knows that shopping in Mount Pleasant is sometimes challenging, however she has found her shopping hot spots: The Antique Center, Goodwill, Kohl’s and, on occasion, Walmart. All of these shopping destinations offer low prices and fashions to fit any style. Think about celebrities whose style you admire and start incorporating some of their basic fashion pieces into your wardrobe. Mount Pleasant has limited resources when it comes to shopping, but the area offers low-priced apparel that’s perfect for experimenting with different styles. Brower and Bradford both prove that budget has nothing to do with emulating celebrity style.
