December 2, 2016 Student Styles, Style, Style & Beauty, Women's Style Student Style Spotlight: Bright, Bold and Business Professional with Kathryn Halvorsen Story by Hannah Kaske Photos by Kayde Hambaum Central Michigan University’s campus serves as a runway for the everyday fashion lover. Forget magazines and paparazzi shots – the real style icons can be spotted walking to class. Grand Central caught up with junior Kathryn Halvorsen, to discuss her personal style. Halvorsen is from Crystal Lake, Illinois and is currently majoring in broadcast and cinematic arts with a minor in electronic media sales. If there are a few words Halvorsen describes her style as it’s comfortable, cute and casual. Being comfortable while staying trendy is a must for this CMU student. All Eyes On Her Busy doesn’t even begin to describe Halvorsen’s student life – she’s involved in seven different organizations. From an anchor on News Central 34, to a Central Michigan Life reporter, the camera is constantly on her. Staying photo ready is important to Halverson because it reflects her professionalism here at CMU. “Being in broadcasting has shaped my style because I have to be presentable to my viewers. I avoid the low cut shirts and ripped jeans look because I don’t want to represent myself in that way while being a news anchor. It is important for me to dress to impress, and dress professionally when I’m not in a blazer, dress or dress pants. I still wear clothes that are stylish – but never too revealing.” It seems that most students on campus gravitate toward sweatpants and hoodies, but not for Halvorsen. She says as much as she wants to wear those things, she still tries to keep it professional with her style. Professionalism Matters You may never catch Halvorsen sporting the same style on campus. She switches from edgy and chic to dressy and business professional often. “Being in broadcasting requires me to dress like a 25-year-old out in the real world. I live by the ‘look good, feel good’ quote. I simply feel happier and confident with myself when I take the time to get ready, because it makes me more productive.” With the season on the cusp of change, scarves are critical for achieving Halvorsen’s perfect winter look – she has up to 20 in her closet. She says that they pair well with any jacket or long sleeve, and they are her go-to cold-weather accessory. Achieving Her Makeup Look One makeup item Halvorsen cannot go without is lipgloss or chapstick. Although Halvorsen enjoys shopping at stores like Dry Goods, AKIRA, Francesecas and Express, she finds the best deals at Target and T.J Maxx. She tries to keep up with the current trends while keeping a budget. Her style inspiration sparks from following different famous fashionistas on Instagram, and she admires Blake Lively and her outfits from the show “Gossip Girl”. Halvorsen keeps her style business professional while still reflecting her vibrant and fun personality. Next time you’re flipping through the channels, keep an eye out for her on News Central.
