September 24, 2013 Campus Fashion, Student Styles, Style, Trend and Beauty How to make your own flower crown Flower crowns are not just for the summer anymore. It seemed like high-waisted shorts, crop tops and flower crowns were a staple for every music festival this summer. Who says you have to give up your summer staple? Go ahead and get creative and make a maroon and gold one to wear to football games. While the crowns aren’t too expensive (ranging from about $6 at Claire’s to $16 at Urban Outfitters), you are stuck with the colors they give you. Why not get creative and make your own? The total for the flower crown pictured above was about $8 and all of the materials were from Wal-Mart. Here is what you will need: – Fake flowers (the example above used two different colors, maroon and gold) – Stretchy headband (Goody Headwraps are great for this and come in a pack of three) – Needle – Thread First you will need to take the flowers off the stems by pulling them off. Place the flowers on the headband so you can estimate how many you need. The next step is to sew the flowers onto the headband. You may want to choose thread that is the same colors as your flowers so it blends in better. This part can be fairly time consuming, so turn on a good movie, have a cup of tea by your side and get comfortable. Once all of the flowers are sewed on, your flower crown is complete! One quick tip: be sure when you sew the flowers on that you don’t make your stitches too big. Since the headband is stretchy, the stitches could make it harder to stretch onto your head. If you don’t want to use a stretchy headband you can use a standard one and get the special tape that some websites said to use (gardeners tape). This gives it more of an “earthy” feel. Making this crown was harder than it seemed. Originally, it seemed like a good plan to glue the flowers onto the headband, but that didn’t work out too well. Another option was necessary. A few craft websites suggested using a special tape, while others said to sew it on. Sewing seemed more practical since the headband was stretchy. Plus most college students have a needle and thread at their disposal or can easily obtain both. Wear your flower crown to football games or out to parties with your friends. Since it’s different from the usual hair bows worn to games, it will help you stand out from the crowd. Photo | Shannon Millard, Photo Editor
