DIY: Head to toe, the sock bun

Katie Pohlman explains how to do a trendy new hair trick sure to knock your socks off.

If you are like every other typical female college student, you do not have time to sit in front of the mirror every day styling your hair until you have perfect curls complete with volume and bounce. In fact, you may even see putting your hair up into a messy bun as a hassle. Of course, we all wish that we had our own personal hair stylist to transform our locks every morning before class, but for many of us, we will not get that type of treatment unless we are the rich or famous. If you are looking for a new and easy hairstyle that requires little effort and great big, curly results, look no further. The latest trend for busy girls on the run is known as “the sock bun.”

This hairstyle will have you looking like you just walked out of the beauty salon, no matter which way you wear it. The sock bun produces bouncy curls without the use of a curling iron or any type of heat. It is fast and easy to do and does not require any hair products. This hairstyle is achieved overnight by simply curling your hair in a sock while you sleep. When you wake up in the morning you will have beautiful curls, sure to impress. It sounds silly, but the sock bun will transform your dull, straight hair into voluptuous curls.

Here is how it works:

  • Find an extra sock. A longer, thinner dress sock should do the trick. If you do not have a dress sock, you can use any type of sock you have. Once you have your sock, cut off the toe.
  • Next, you will roll the sock into a doughnut shape.
  • Put your dry hair into a high ponytail, one that rests high on top of your head. To ensure that you get all of your hair, it may be helpful to flip your head over and gather all of your hair to place into your ponytail. Use a hair tie to secure your hair, preferably a thinner one rather than a thicker one.
  • Spray some water on your ponytail, just enough to get your hair damp. You do not want it to be soaking wet.
  • Grab your rolled up sock and push your ponytail through the hole, pulling the sock straight up to the tip of your ponytail. When you pull the sock to the top of your ponytail, slide it back down just a little bit.  With the hair that is sticking out, spread it all the way around the sock evenly. Start rolling the sock down so your hair is being fed through the hole, then up and around the sock.
  • Continue rolling all of your hair onto the sock until you reach the base of your ponytail. Try to keep the ponytail straight up while you roll so that the hair is taut.
  • Once you are finished rolling your hair onto the sock, you will have a bun on top of your head. If needed, secure extra pieces of hair with bobby pins.
  • Lastly, go to sleep. The bun should be high enough on your head to where it will be comfortable enough to sleep in. When you awake in the morning, remove the bun and let your curls fall. Style them to your desire.
