How to: Stay stylish (and warm) this winter

Whether we’re ready or not, cold weather is fast approaching, along with the beloved Michigan snow.

It’s getting to be that time of year when we have to remember to put on an uncomfortable amount of layers, gloves, socks, hats and of course, our often-too-big winter coats. While winter requires layers that can become cumbersome, there’s a few sensible coat options that will not only keep you warm, but will keep you looking chic.

Military Style

The military style trend became popular last season and is back for more this year. As a unisex style, this type of coat can look good on just about anyone. An army green coat with leather accents can look edgy and chic, while a neutral gray with gold or silver accents looks subtle and understated.

Trench Coat

The trench coat has been around for ages and has most likely taken up residence in your parents’ closet or attic. They say fashion always comes back, and in this case it’s mostly true, as the trench coat has made a revival with only a few changes. Try an oversized look to channel the runway.

¾ Length

With skirts like the midi and maxi making a comeback this summer, it’s no wonder the trend has continued into the winter season. Coats with long lengths have been rocking runways, done especially well by designers like Concept Korea and Richard Chai.

Quilted

This texture isn’t just for childhood blankets anymore.  Quilted outerwear looks effortless and can be dressed up or down based on your choice of accessories. While this style can be pricier, it is a classic and will last for years to come.

Faux Fur

Whether it’s all over or just a collar accent, faux fur is undoubtedly a trend for winter 2014. It might be short lived – fur usually is, but there’s no denying that it makes a fun and fashionable statement.  If you oftentimes describe yourself as a “hipster,” this style is probably for you.
