Insomnia Cookies heat up the oven for night owls

Do you ever have trouble falling asleep at night, craving something soft, sweet and chewy?

Insomnia Cookies just might be your perfect fix.

The bakery was founded back in 2003 in Pennsylvania and since then has expanded with more than 30 locations around the country. From Kalamazoo, Ypsilanti to East Lansing, Insomnia Cookies has finally made its way north to Mount Pleasant.

“We have doors scattered all over Michigan, so this was just kind the next logical campus to open up on,” Marketing Manager Renee Sarnecky said. “All of our campuses in Michigan are getting an overwhelming response from the brand being present.”

Sarnecky calls the atmosphere of the bakery warm and inviting, and fun at the same time. Insomnia Cookies takes pride in providing customers with cookies that are not only delicious, but warm and fresh out of the oven.

“They can definitely expect warm fresh cookies at all times of the day,” Sarnecky said. “All of our products are freshly baked on site throughout the day and all of the cookies are kept in warmers so every time you come in and get a cookie, it’s warm and fresh.”

Junior Danielle Wieczorek visited the shop with her friends and bought a double chocolate chunk cookie because of her love of chocolate.

Wieczorek said she was recently at Michigan State University, visiting her brother and went to East Lansing’s Insomnia Cookies. She was thrilled to come back and find out Mount Pleasant had opened its own shop.

“Nothing is better than a warm cookie especially (since) it’s so cold outside,” Wieczorek said. “So to be able to come here, being able to warm up, other than soup, especially with a delicious cookie, it’s the bomb. It’s so nice.”

Insomnia Cookies offers a variety of cookies from the classic chocolate chip called “Chocolate Chunk” to oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle, sugar, s’mores, chocolate peanut butter cup, and the list goes on.

The bakery also offers cookie cakes, brownies and ice cream. Customers can order the cookie a la mode, which is a desert with your choice of ice cream on top of a cookie. Students can buy a cookiewich, which is a scoop of ice cream between two cookies.  For those who want something light and simple to accompany their cookie, Insomnia Cookies offer containers of Prairie Farms brand milk available in whole, 2 percent, and chocolate milk.

Insomnia Cookies separate themselves from competition and other businesses by not only offering delivery, but also closing at 3 a.m. Sarnecky said she thinks that is what makes the company unique from other businesses.

“It’s not the typical delivery item, especially a late night delivery item,” Sarnecky said. “So, I think everybody craves a little bit different when they’re up late; whether (it’s) getting home from a late night out or up late studying. Not everybody wants some greasy food or a sandwich or pizza.”

Senior Alicia Hines loves the concept of Insomnia Cookies and the fact they’re open late. Hines said she is definitely a person who loves late night snacking.

“I think we have so many sandwich shops that constantly keep popping up and this is just a very different type of shop (selling) sweets and even milk and stuff,” Hines said. “Just very different from other standard delivery places.”

Not only does Insomnia Cookies have the mission to bring fresh cookies to campus and the Mount Pleasant community, but to also host several fundraising opportunities. One of the fundraising opportunities is where the business offers cookie donations and can provide cookies for a discounted price for different organizations.

“With the fundraising and helping out community is definitely something that makes us more unique than normal businesses as well,” Sarnecky said. “We like to get people involved in the community and campus. We have multiple fundraising options so we’re constantly giving back at the same time.”

Insomnia Cookies opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 3 a.m., with delivery from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends.  It is located on 1620 S. Mission St. and students can make an order by calling 1-877-63-COOKIE or 1-877-632-6654.

I would love to know if some day in the future Insomnia Cookies could come out with a gluten-free cookie. I’ve enjoyed one of their cookies in the past and would be inclined to buy more if I could eat them! I know many people on campus (and off) with the intolerance so I think they could bring in a decent amount of money with the addition of a gluten-free cookie or two.
