Local ‘Slut Walk’ draws attention to rape culture

More than 150 students gathered on Saturday afternoon at the Bovee University Center to begin a Slut Walk around campus that brought awareness to ending victim blaming.

According to Slut Walk Toronto, “On January 24th, 2011, a representative of the Toronto Police gave shocking insight into the Force’s view of sexual assault by stating: ‘women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.’”

The Organization of Women Leaders headed up the planning of CMU’s first Slut Walk and was assisted by many other groups on campus. T-shirts that read “Attention: Do Not Remove Without Consent” and “Embrace Equality” bracelets were sold before the event, raising money for the Isabella County Women’s Aid Service.

The walk was followed by a keynote speaker and representatives from OWLs said they hope for the Slut Walk to become an annual event.
