Some might say that the biggest void in the Mount Pleasant food market is a deli to pick up a sandwich and some soup around lunchtime.

Surprising to most, The Brass Café presents an excellent deli-style lunch menu, which boasts reasonable prices, unlike their somewhat steep dinner offerings.

Located in the heart of downtown Mount Pleasant, the Brass Café, 128 S. Main St., is open from 11 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Brass provides a family owned environment with a big city feel.

Upon review of the menu, I decided that the best option would be the Brass Turkey Club, which is sliced Michigan turkey with avocado, bacon, provolone, bean sprouts, cucumbers and tomato on a multigrain bread.

Each sandwich comes with your choice of a side, either soup, salad, fries, Brass potato chips or an apple – I settled on the Brass potato chips.

I also ordered a cup of soup to start the meal because they had their chicken and white bean soup on special.

The soup was served within five minutes of my order being placed. It contained chicken, beans and vegetables in a chicken broth that had a slight but surprising spiciness that worked wonderfully.

The sandwich was served just under 20 minutes after I had ordered it, which seems like a while for a deli sandwich and chips, but another person at my table ordered a grilled chicken sandwich that I believe was the reason for the wait.

Everything on my Brass Turkey Club tasted very fresh. The turkey, bacon and avocado all had great flavor. As I consumed the sandwich, I could notice the tomato and the sprouts, but neither were overpowering to the rest of the items, just perfectly complementary.

There was a large amount of avocado spread on both halves of my sandwich, which in some bites seemed to dominate the overall taste, but it never fully took away from the intended taste medley.

The multigrain bread was also a great means of delivering this sandwich; I can’t imagine it working nearly as well on white bread, sourdough or in a wrap.

As a personal preference, I also added a bit of ranch to the sandwich – it mixed perfectly with the avocado spread and actually brought out the bacon as well.

The Brass potato chips were also an excellent choice; I couldn’t think of a better side to have with a delicious sandwich than homemade chips, which had both great crisp and flavor.

With great service, delicious food and a wide selection of sandwiches, the Brass Café might just be the best place to grab lunch in all of Mount Pleasant.

I give the it 5 out of 5 stars.
